Electric Bike Luggage: How to Choose a Rack, Panniers or Basket

Summary
Compare common e-bike luggage options and check mounting, load limits and handling before carrying your everyday gear.
Body
Think about what you carry before choosing a luggage system. A laptop, lunch and a rain jacket can fit into a small pannier, while irregular grocery bags may be easier to load into a basket. The right setup depends on the shape and weight of the load and on the mounting points available on your bicycle.
Check the bicycle and accessory limits
Look up the bicycle’s total permitted load and the separate rating for the rack or basket. The total may include the rider and accessories as well as luggage. A rack that physically attaches to the bicycle still needs to be approved for that mounting position and use. Ask the bicycle or accessory supplier if the instructions are unclear.
Choose a mounting position you can live with
Panniers keep items off your back and can place the load lower than a basket. Check that your heels clear the bags and that the hooks fit the rack tubing. A front basket makes items easy to reach, but it can change steering feel. Whatever you choose, keep straps away from wheels and brakes, and make sure lights remain visible.
Try the setup before a busy trip
Begin with a light load on a quiet route. Check how the bicycle feels when you start, turn and stop. If a bag shifts or a hook comes loose, stop and correct the attachment before riding again. When the system works, pack dense items low where the approved setup allows and secure anything that could move.
