Electric Bike Accessories: A Compatibility Checklist Before You Buy

Summary
Check mounting points, clearances, load ratings and electrical compatibility before adding accessories to an e-bike.
Body
A mirror, phone mount or basket should solve a specific problem without making the bicycle harder to control. Start by writing down the exact model and identifying where the accessory will attach. Two bikes that look similar can have different mounting points, cable routes and clearances.
Check the mounting instructions
Read both the bicycle and accessory instructions before buying. Compare the mounting dimensions and check any load or use limits. Confirm that the accessory is suitable for the intended location. If the installation would require drilling the frame or changing a structural part, ask the manufacturer or a competent mechanic about an approved option.
Test the full range of movement
Turn the handlebars both ways and make sure the accessory does not pull on cables, block brake levers or contact the frame. If the bicycle folds, check what happens through the entire fold. Keep lights and reflectors visible. For a phone mount, set navigation before you move and stop somewhere suitable to make changes.
Check electrical accessories separately
Verify that any powered accessory is supported by the bicycle manufacturer. Similar plugs can have different wiring or electrical requirements. Use approved connections and get advice if compatibility is uncertain. Once the accessory is installed, check it while stationary and again after a short ride. Pay attention to shifting mounts, rubbing cables or any change in how the controls feel.
