Electric Bike Maintenance: A Simple Monthly Checklist
The Five-Minute Pre-Ride Check

Before setting off, squeeze both brake levers and confirm they operate normally. Check tire pressure against the tire and bicycle maker’s recommendations, inspect for embedded debris and verify that wheels are secure. Test the lights and look for damaged wiring. Listen for new rattles on the first few meters.

Keep the Drivetrain Working Smoothly

Dirt and neglected lubrication accelerate chain and gear wear. Clean gently using products appropriate for bicycle components, dry the drivetrain and lubricate the chain as directed. Wipe away excess lubricant, which can attract abrasive grit. High-torque mid-drive systems may need drivetrain checks more frequently than lightly used city bicycles.

Respect Brakes and Electronics

Heavier e-bikes can place considerable demand on brake pads and rotors. Replace worn components before performance deteriorates. Avoid pressure washing around bearings, displays, seals and battery connectors. After riding in rain, dry the bicycle and inspect exposed contacts according to the manual.

When to Call a Professional

Book service if the frame develops cracks, wheels lose alignment, braking feels inconsistent or assistance cuts out unexpectedly. Battery opening, damaged wiring and complex motor faults should not be DIY projects. Record work performed and keep firmware and component information with the bike’s documentation.
